The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. …deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.

~ Carl Rogers

Imagine what the world might be like if we accepted it as a sacred, joyous responsibility to give the gifts of deep understanding, of kindness and caring.

It would be a nicer world, I think. A lot less violent. A lot more just. More likely to avert ecological disaster. The kind of world I want to live in and one I’d be happy for my granddaughter and great-nieces to inherit.

What would it look like to give these gifts to ourselves and to others?

It would be far from an anything-goes kind of world. We can be kind, caring and empathic and be clear about boundaries and limits. In fact, setting limits, even tough ones, with empathy and understanding is a great gift.

Boundaries and limits create the conditions for us to be our best selves. As do adequate food, housing, employment and health care for all, which this world that we’re envisioning would have.

A Holiday Wish

As our days grow colder and the hours of darkness grow longer, may we each bring to the world the gifts of deep understanding, illumination and healing.

These are among the most important gifts we can give*, the ones that meet our deepest longings and the world’s greatest needs.

* Though my son just told me he prefers the new X-box!
